Dusk in Honolulu and some thoughts about displacement...

I shot this image last night on my way home from work...
I found this interesting quote from a New Yorker article about the Cuban writer Leonardo Padura Fuentes which cited the late great Cuban writer in exile, Reinaldo Arenas, who said of cultural displacement:

"Everyone who lives outside his context is always a bit of a ghost, because I am here, but at the same time I remember a person who walked those streets, who is there, and that same person is me.  So sometimes I really don't know if I am here or there.  And at times the longing to be there is greater than the necessity of being there."

Details of Charlot mural at UH Manoa's Bachman Hall

"Night Hula" is one of several of artist Jean Charlot's murals on campus. I read that it is 9x15' and depicts an ancient Hawaiian Hula scene. It was originally created as a private commission for a law office in Waikiki, then it was moved in 1991 and donated by the Aluli family to Kamehameha Schools.  After suffering some pretty serious weather-related damage there, it was re-located to UH-Manoa and restored in 2003. It is pretty cool -- and near my office.
